As a member of ExamWorks’ HR team, the Director of Compliance, Human Resources will support the business through the administration and development of HR compliance programs and policies and assist with employment-related conflict management and resolution. This role serves as a credible and trusted advisor to Senior HR and business leaders, leveraging experience, expertise, organizational awareness, business acumen, a pragmatic mindset and the ability to effectively partner with and influence others.


  • Lead, research and strategize HR Compliance efforts and provide practical compliance advice across a broad range of HR and employment-related matters such as employee classification, time and attendance, absence management, hiring and separation, job description management, performance management, diversity, discrimination, harassment, compensation, benefits, privacy, recordkeeping and general employee relation needs. 
  • In connection with HR leadership and Legal, identifies potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; prioritizes high and low risk exposures and develops/implements corrective action plans for resolution of issues, and provides general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.
  • Drive and ensure company-wide compliance with federal, state and local employment and labor laws such as the DOL and IRS guidelines, I-9’s, EEO, ADA, USERRA, WARN Act, ADEA, Title VII, FLSA, background checks, drug screening, etc.
  • Identify and organize mandatory and/or desired training requirements, advise on training content, collaborate with other COE leaders and recommend external resources if needed.
  • Assist with drafting internal HR policies that are consistent with federal, state and local employment laws; work with applicable ExamWorks management to obtain all necessary approvals for new policies or amendments to existing policies; execute effective communication of policy changes to all affected employees.
  • Conduct and/or assist with internal investigations and the resolution of employment-related issues.
  • Advise/collaborate with HR leaders when handling more serious and complex disciplinary matters.
  • As needed, consult and advise HR leaders/field staff and /or members of management on leave of absence matters and compliance.
  • Prepare or assist legal counsel with preparation of responses to inquiries such as personnel record subpoenas and/or matters or complaints associated with equal opportunity, wage and hour, ADA, unemployment, etc.
  • Draft and review employment and benefits-related documents to assist the HR team and field managers in their operations and/or interpretations of communications or requirements.
  • Assist as needed with reductions in force by providing guidance and establishing processes and practices to help mitigate risk and ensure compliance under various local, state, and/or federal WARN Act requirements
  • Evaluate and standardize HR practices across multi-state business units where applicable; identify necessary variations and provide advice to tailor and implement practices as applicable.
  • Counsel HR and business leaders on compliance issues and trends and responds to routine requests for information on policy interpretation.
  • Counsel and or assist with various HR audit related matters as needed.
  • Assist with integration of employees and HR policies and practices following acquisitions.
  • Assist with special projects and tasks assigned by the VP, Human Resources


  • Bachelor's Degree required; JD (Juris Doctor) is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in-house HR Compliance and/or 2 years actively practicing employment law with at least 1 year working in-house HR compliance. 
  • Extensive experience and knowledge providing U.S. federal, state, and local law and Canadian Provincial HR counseling and guidance on day-to-day operational and compliance issues, policies and processes.
  •  Significant experience with HR compliance, policy management and internal communications.
  •  Experience reviewing and drafting HR policies and procedures (Employee Handbook, Anti-Harassment, Code of Conduct, etc.) and advising on compliance issues and solutions.
  •  Experience managing employee relations and internal investigations with proven success at resolving issues.
  •  Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently within a lean department with minimal administrative support.
  •  Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize and follow through on numerous projects at once.
  •  Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization (human resources, legal department, corporate executives, finance and accounting team, operations managers, etc.) and to gain the trust and confidence of others.
  •  A team-oriented individual with high ethical standards.
  •  An excellent facilitator who is experienced in resolving conflicts and matters of dispute.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret the most complex HR/employment-related documents.
  •  Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook, with up-to-date knowledge of and proficiency in the types and uses of technology in modern corporate compliance programs. 
  •  Strong research skills and critical thinking skills; ability to analyze data or situations to make valid conclusions and propose actionable recommendations.
  •  Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  •  Ability to write clearly and informatively to all required audiences and edit own work for appropriate spelling and grammar.
